Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church has been a presence in the Tawas area for 140 years. Grace was founded in 1886 as the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Abigail Church. In 1939 it was renamed to Grace Evangelical Lutheran, and has been in its current location since the 1950s. The current Pastor at Grace is the Rev Matthew "Max" Miller.
Pastor Max Miller
Pastor Max Miller was born & raised in Michigan, and continued to live here most of his life. He went to Seminary at what was called Lutheran Theological Seminary of Gettysburg in 2006. The Seminary has since joined with Philadelphia to make "United." It was during his internship at Seminary where he was blessed to serve in Pine Ridge, SD. It was in South Dakota where he accepted his first call in Mitchell, SD and he still holds a passion for ministry there on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He served with love and adoration in South Dakota from 2010 through 2020, before moving back to his home state, Michigan. He served as pastor for St. Paul Lutheran Church of Au Gres from 2020 - 2025. Presently he is our pastor at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church of East Tawas.
Max thoroughly enjoys the outdoors and experiences God's creation as often as he can through backpacking, kayaking/canoeing/paddle-boarding, fishing, hunting, and camping.
